15 minutes

Today, we are going to think deeply about the language we use in our school communities.

In that spirit, our first activity is a practice derived from Lectio Divina. It will take around 15 minutes to complete the entire activity.

To begin, you will need a familiar poem, a familiar passage from a book, or the lyrics to a familiar song. The reading should be short- no more than a page long.

Once you have that accessible, follow the activity instructions in this linked worksheet.

When you are done, respond to the following prompts in the text box below. Your responses may be any length.

  1.  Imagine teaching Lectio Divina. Would you use a text you are teaching, or invite students to choose their own? Which text(s) might you use?

  2. Reflect on a subject or a text you struggled with when you were a student. Maybe it was too complex, or maybe you were taking it too literally- just some text or topic you "couldn't get."  Do you think that engaging in a practice like Lectio Divina would have impacted your relationship to that material? Do any other practices come to mind that change the way students relate to the material they study?
